The Gombe State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned the higher tax rates imposed by the board of internal revenue, saying this was exploitative and repressive.
Speaking at a press conferencein Gombe, chairman of the union Umar Adamu said the tax increase of between 180 and 200 per cent was unacceptable to the lecturers.
He said also the state government failed to take into account expansion needs of the university in terms of staff and student strength and facilities like hostels and lecture halls.
Adamu expressed concern overwhat he called underfunding of the university and lamented that this had resulted into irregular payment of the salaries of his members and failure to meet immediate needs of the institution.
He said many lecturers were yet to receive their June salaries, which he said was capable of affecting their academic performance.
