The additional financing would amount to US$110 million, says a WB release

The positive outcome achieved so far by the project has prompted the government to request the World Bank for additional financing to launch a third round of Academic Innovation Fund (AIF) and include new activities.

religious and education sectors get biggest foreign fundingThe additional financing will also be utilised to expand Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) applications and establish a Quality Assurance mechanism at public universities.

The additional financing would amount to US$110 million and increase the total IDA contribution to the project to US$191 million from the original US$81 million, says a WB release.

Six public universities have already been connected to BdREN and this is expected to establish the basic infrastructure backbone for connecting all remaining universities soon.

The World Bank supported 'Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) has contributed in providing the universities much needed research infrastructure in the form of state-of-art equipments and instruments for science labs and modernized laboratories.

In an interim impact assessment of the project, the World Bank said the project, in its fourth year of implementation, has recorded significant progress, especially in promoting academic innovation in the country's higher education institutions through two rounds of AIF.

Computer labs and lecture theatres with multimedia facilities have also been established in universities, said a World Bank release.

It said the government of Bangladesh, with support from the World Bank, has been implementing the HEQEP through the University Grants Commission (UGC). The project promotes academic innovation in both public and private universities through a competitive funding mechanism, known as the AIF.

Through the project, efforts have been successful in providing library automation, campus network, books and journals to the students and faculty members of universities. Some 65 research articles have been published in peer reviewed journals and universities have also organized 390 national and international seminars and workshops.

The UGC Digital Library created by the project is now providing science, engineering and medical journals to teachers and students free of cost through specialized e-resource providers.
