The fallen standard of education in the country has been attributed to the poor development of infrastructure universities in Nigeria.

A former university teacher and author, Dr. Felix Oragwu, who made the observation at a public forum, said lack of infrastructure and learning equipment account for the low ranking of the nation's universities amongst other institutions in the world.

Oragwu said, "From 1960 to 1970, universities in Nigeria were ranked within the first ten in the world, but by 2009, Nigerian universities were struggling to be mentioned within the first 1000 in the world".

Stating that countries in Africa like South Africa and Ghana were also at some point rated among the first 20 in the world, he said the downfall of African universities, particularly Nigeria was worrisome.

"The second biggest problem for the tremendous downfall of universities in Nigeria is in the quality of the graduates produced and their achievements, as ranked in the globalized world. The third problem includes the publications and inventions arising from the universities'', he further stated.

According to him, "The world can see how fast China has grown and this will have a tremendous effect on its institutions. Oragwu further stated that attention should be given to the development of technical and entrepreneurial colleges.

Saying that technicians and entrepreneurs are the people running the economy, he pointed out the need for the establishment of  colleges for the purpose of training these sets of manpower.
