HELENA – Some big names in Montana politics and higher education gathered at the Capitol in Helena on Friday to announce a $2 million grant for the University of Montana and Montana State University that's aimed at training a new generation of entrepreneurs over the next three years.

University of MontanaThe grant is part of a nation-wide effort by The Blackstone Charitable Foundation, and UM president Royce Engstrom, MSU president Waded Cruzado, U.S. Senators Max Baucus (D-MT) and Jon Tester (D-MT) were on hand for the announcement.

Tester believes the investment will yield results. "I think that this could really help and expand our economy and employ more people and really help build the economy. And I'll tell you, I mean, we're just starting this out now, the goal is to move it through out the state over time and you know, get into Indian country, get into the most rural areas of the state."

The LaunchPad program, developed at the University of Miami, will be available to 30,000 students at UM and MSU, regardless of their major.

"Entrepreneurship is the single most effective way to spur economic growth and job creation," said Blackstone's president and COO, Tony James. "We must all play a role in nurturing talent, and through Blackstone LaunchPad, students will have access to an expanded universe of resources and years of institutional knowledge, helping them launch ventures that can take root locally and strengthen Montana's economy."
