ABUAD Gets COREN, CPN Accreditations For Computer, Engineering

The professional body is responsible for accrediting computer programmes in Nigeria.

Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has been granted accreditation to run computer programmes by the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs of ABUAD, Mr. Tunde Olofintila, after the institution received a letter titled 'Accreditation of Undergraduate Engineering programmes', signed by COREN's Registrar, Mr. Kamilu Maliki, an engineer, on July 16.
Also, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria has approved seven engineering programmes that ABUAD presented for the last month's Pre-Accreditation Visitation to the four-year old institution.

The letter, Olofintila stated, conveyed COREN's approval to the university following the Pre-Accreditation Visitation to the undergraduate engineering programmes to the university in June.

The programmes are Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering as well as Mechatronics Engineering.

Maliki, however, reminded the university that COREN would be conducting random and periodic visits within the validity period of the approval to check the status of facilities on ground.

He added that accreditation might be withdrawn if there was any noticeable evidence of decline in standard.

The COREN registrar, therefore, advised ABUAD to comply strictly with the recommendation highlighted during the exit meeting with the university as contained in the report — to ensure that the standards that earned the university accreditation were not only maintained but are constantly improved upon.

The statement noted that the professional accreditation would encourage the Proprietor, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), whose vision was to reform functional education in the country.

The latest accreditation came on the heels of a similar one on June 17, when the NUC granted a full accreditation to all the 14 programmes the university presented for accreditation.

Speaking on the implication of the CPN professional accreditation, Olofintila said it would afford the university's Computer Science students the opportunity to run their degree and professional programmes simultaneously.

"This affords them the opportunity to graduate with two different certificates, one academic and the other professional," he said.
