JALANDHAR: With Punjab Technical University not getting recognition from Distance Education Council of UGC for running its distance education programme unrest is being caused in the Learning Centres of the university and its students who got admissions in August 2012. While the future of these students is hanging in balance LCs are worried more about their financial losses.

Punjab Technical UniversityStudents and owners of Learning Centres of Punjab Technical University blocked traffic outside the University campus for around half an hour on Kapurthala – Jalandhar road on Monday to protest against the University authorities for their inability to obtain the approval from the University Grants Commission for its distance education program even after and and a half year and for alleged irregularities in the university.

After the protest University constituted a committee taking four members from protesting Unions to pursue the case for affiliation by UGC for its distance education programme. The leaders of the protestors handed over a memorandum to University registrar H S Bains and a meeting was also held.

The protestors also alleged that the financial irregularity to the tune of Rs 35 crore had been committed by the university authorities. They alleged that it had failed to supply the semester books, mandatory for the Universities, to its students enrolled with various centers across the country.

Stating that earlier they submitted a memorandum to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, PTU DEP Student Union President Nirmal Singh said "It seems that the government too has taken the issue lightly and did not consider it significant even as future of lakh of students was involved. He announced that if government would fail to take any steps then chain hunger strike would be started and CM's residence would be gheraoed.

The President of PTU DEP Learning Centre Union, Ravinder Kumar, stated that the University was declared as the Best University in Distance Education just three years back has been brought to such a stand that it is facing the threat of closure owing to the wrong policies adopted by the VC to appease his near and dear ones. Demanding the immediate removal of the Vice Chancellor, Kumar further said that in this time of crisis when the admissions of PTU DEP had been blocked by the High Court in the absence of the UGC approval, the University has further worsened the scenario by reducing the LC share by 10% to accommodate payments to persons close to the VC.
