Sixty five per cent of over 900 million non-literate persons in the world are women, the managing director of Kaduna State Media Corporation, Tamani Yusuf has said.

Yusuf made this known in Minna during a presentation at the meeting of broadcast and print media operators and five states implementing Girls Education Project, (GEP) which was organised by the Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC), in collaboration with the United Nations Children Education Fund ( UNICEF).

Yusuf who attributed the development to lack of educational opportunities, emphasised that majority of the women never saw the four walls of a classroom in their lives, adding that girls spend over 35 per cent of their time at young age doing unpaid jobs.

Emphasising the benefits of education to women, she noted, "with education, women can make better decisions for themselves, improve their productive health which will in turn reduce the high rate of maternal mortality, which will also inform better nutrition for the family."

UNICEF disclosed in its presentation that Nigeria has one of the largest population of children who are not in school, particularly in the North Western part of the country, adding that majority of the children are girls.

The UNICEF Kaduna Zone communications officer, Rabiu Musa, emphasised the importance of Girls Education Project (GEP) as a goal of achieving significant progress in Nigeria towards the MDGs target.

According to him, one of the aims and objectives of the GEP is to eliminate disparity in primary and secondary education at all levels of education not later than 2015.

Musa said it was also to improve the quality of life of girls and women in Nigeria through a collaborative, inter-sectoral approach to girls education, achievement of their rights to education as a key factor in the attainment of the overall MDGs and NEEDS/SEEDS in Nigeria.

He noted that the phases 1 and 2 of the GEP project has recorded some successes and that in collaboration with DFID Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Education, the foreign body has decided to support the third phase (GEP3) to accelerate the progress.

Musa disclosed that five states would be included in the GEP3 project, namely, Katsina, Niger, Sokoto, Zamfara and Bauchi.

According to him, the GEP3 project which is to last for eight years is aimed at getting more girls in target states in northern Nigeria to complete their basic education and acquire skills for life and livelihood and to improve social and economic opportunities for girls and women.

Emphasising the role of the media, the UNICEF communications officer, charged ''the awesome responsibility of the media is to speak out for the girl –child, to ensure gender equality, vulnerability and female education. The media is to create awareness for change, promote positive effects of girls' education, sensitise and encourage the parents and promote female role models that would serve as motivation for the society.
