Country to Educate 40 Million Illiterates

Nigeria hopes to have educated 40 million people by 2015 through various literacy programmes to achieve Education For All (EFA) and education targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), executive secretary of the National Commission for Mass Education, Alhaji Jibrin Paiko, said yesterday.

Paiko, who spoke in Katsina at a workshop organised by the commission in collaboration with UNESCO, said the training was aimed at strengthening the capacity of participants to ensure performance.

Paiko said the Federal Government provided $6.3million for the three-year strategic framework aimed at boosting adult and youth literacy in the country.

He said 433 master trainers have been trained nationwide by selected institutions across the country.

He said the current facilitators' training is being held in 31 out of the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT, noting that due to the delay in funds assessment, Oyo, Lagos, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau and Osun States would hold theirs on the 18th of this month.

The executive secretary said 4, 107 facilitators are expected to participate in the training across the country. He added that the success of literacy programmes nationwide and attainment of the Education For All goal depends on effective discharge of roles and responsibilities of states and local governments.

"Nigeria like other sub-Saharan African countries is facing challenges of high number of illiterates which comprises of out-of school children, youths and adults who have never attended school. A large percentage of these include girls and young women," he said.

Also speaking, the state's Commissioner for Education, Professor Aminu Kado Kurfi, said Katsina State government is committed to adult education. He added that last year the government procured instructional/learning materials worth N9 million.

Professor Kurfi further stated that the government disburses N50 million annually for the payment of facilitators' allowances across the state.
