In a bid to revive civic education in primary schools in Kosofe Constituency II, Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Ajibayo Adeyeye last Wednesday took some outstanding pupils numbering 132 on an excursion to Murtala Mohammed International Airport and the Lagos State Television (LTV).

The aim according to Adeyeye was to broaden the students' knowledge and expand their scope as regards the rudiment of air transportation and broadcasting, adding that the exposure would not only help them concentrate on their studies but it would be an eye opener for them to correctly choose their future careers.

The lawmaker also explained that the initiative was part of his contributions to the educational standard of school children in constituency, adding that the thrust of the programme was to expose the outstanding students drawn from 22 primary schools, to basic things that would ginger them to remain focused to their future careers.

Speaking to reporters at the two-day excursion, Adeyeye explained "the programme was christened J.A Youths LEAP and the LEAP stands for Leadership, Empowerment, and Achievement Programme. We discovered that there is civic education gap in Nigeria to the extent that the elites do not know much about governance especially in this presidential system of government we are running as a country."

He added, "As a result of this, I feel a sense of responsibility that there is a need to bridge the gap of civic education and that is why I have chosen to start with the pupils who are indisputably our tomorrow and hopefully, I will graduate this to the level of Community Development Association, the Residents Association in a short while, the adolescent and other group of people," he said.

Speaking on the modality for selection, he explained that three pupils were selected from primary 5 and 6 in the 22 primary schools within the constituency where the best six pupils from each school made the excursion where they are exposed to the workings of professionals and access into an aircraft.

"They experienced how air transportation works in Nigeria and we took them to Lagos State Television (LTV) where they were able to see the production and control rooms. And after the training, they are going to give talks on leadership training and the roles of government to the society and the roles of the citizens to the government respectively," the lawmaker said.

He lamented that schools no longer teach civic education as a subject, "and that is why we are going to expose them to lectures on civic education and after the lecture and presentation to them, we will give them gifts and awards and at the end of the day, we will ask them to write an essay on what they have experienced during the excursion and the best three pupils would be given prizes.

"And when they resume in September, we expect one of the representatives of each school to stand before the Assembly of the school and read a report of this outing to his/her colleagues so that it would motivate them to put more efforts in their academic pursuit so that they can be part of the programme next year. Basically, the idea behind this is to bridge the civics education gap in our society.

"You will appreciate the fact that most of them did not come from the rich family because they are students of public schools and none of them had ever had any opportunity of visiting Airport in their life let alone entering an aircraft.

"A lot of them might not have the opportunity of excursion because it is very unusual for them to organise such and they also had the opportunity of touring the Lagos State House of Assembly where they heard information about how the government operates," he added.
