The Arkansas Department Of Education Reminding Drivers Of School Bus Traffic Laws

Written By Blogger on Senin, 12 Agustus 2013 | 09.12

LITTLE ROCK, AR- The Arkansas Department Of Education wants to remind motorists of school bus traffic laws.

A special statewide public awareness effort focusing on school bus safety called "Flashing Red. Kids Ahead" is starting Monday, August 12 and lasting for three weeks.

This campaign will be an opportunity to remind Arkansas motorists to obey traffic laws whenever they are near a school bus.

U.S. Department of EducationSchool leaders are reminding drivers that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus whenever its red lights are flashing and students are loading and unloading the bus.

Arkansas Education Commissioner Dr. Tom Kimbrell says, "Our schools are set to begin the new school year in just a few days.  This effort reminds motorists they play an important role in keeping students safe."

Dr. Kimbrell adds, "As drivers, we have a responsibility to students everywhere to know and obey all traffic laws, especially when we are near a school bus."

The Arkansas Department Of Education website lists safety measures that students and parents can take while going to and from the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus.

When getting ready for school:

  • Have your children put everything they carry in a backpack or school bag so that they won´t drop things along the way.
  • Have them wear bright, contrasting colors so they will be more easily seen by drivers.
  • Make sure they leave home on time so they can walk to the bus stop and arrive before the bus is due. Running can be dangerous.

When Walking to the Bus Stop:

  • Walk your young child to the bus stop and have older children walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.
  • Practice good pedestrian behavior: walk on the sidewalk, if there is no sidewalk, stay out of the street.
  • If you must walk in the street, walk single file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as you can.
  • Stop and look left, right and then left again if you must cross the street. Do the same thing at driveways and alleys.
