Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study

Each year, the Blakemore Foundation awards language fellowships to individuals from USA pursuing professional, business, technical or academic careers that involve the regular use of an East or Southeast Asian language. These fellowships are offered in an academic year of advanced language study abroad at some selected institutions in East or Southeast Asia. The grants cover tuition and a stipend for related educational expenses, basic living costs and transportation. The deadline for applications is December 31, 2013 for study starting between June 2014 and May 2015.

Study Subject (s): Language scholarships are awarded for study of the following modern languages of East and Southeast Asia: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer and Burmese.
Course Level: The grants fund an academic year of advanced language study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei, and similar programs in other countries of East and SE Asia.

Eligibility: To be eligible for a Blakemore Freeman Fellowship, an applicant must:
-Be pursuing a professional, business, technical or academic career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language
-Have a college undergraduate degree
-Be at or near an advanced level in the language as defined in the grant guidelines (Minimum requirement is 3 years of study of the language at the college level or equivalent fluency)
-Able to devote oneself exclusively to full-time intensive language study during the term of the grant. Grants are not made for part-time study or research.
-Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Scholarship Description: Since 1990, the Foundation has awarded over $14 million in language grants to individuals using an East or Southeast Asian language in their careers. Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded to individuals pursuing professional, business, technical or academic careers that involve the regular use of an East or Southeast Asian language. The Blakemore Freeman Fellowships fund an academic year of advanced language study abroad of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and selected Southeast Asian languages.

Duration of award (s): The Blakemore Freeman Fellowships fund an academic year of advanced language study abroad.

What does it cover? The grants cover tuition and a stipend for related educational expenses, basic living costs and transportation, but do not include dependent expenses.

Selection Criteria:
-Focused, well-defined career objective involving Asia in which use of the language is an important aspect -Potential to make a significant contribution to a field of study or area of professional or business activity in an Asian country
-Prior experience in the country or involvement or participation in activities related to the country
-Good academic, professional or business background, appropriate to the career program.

Notification: Grantees will be selected and notified of grants by late March/early April.

How to Apply: Application materials should be carefully addressed, using the complete mailing address of the Foundation
-Completed application form
-Essay (three to four pages in length, double-spaced) discussing:
-Applicant's academic, professional or business background
-Prior study and current use of the language and involvement with the Asian country
-Career objectives and how the language is being used to achieve them
-One recent letter of recommendation from an individual familiar with applicant's academic, professional or business experience.
-Curriculum vitae
-Official college transcript from the last institution attended (applicable only to those who have not received a doctorate). Electronic transcripts or official paper documents are both acceptable.
-Applicants for programs involving tutorials should submit the following additional information with their application:
-Description of the proposed tutorial program
- Information regarding the proposed tutors' professional qualifications
-Budget for estimating tutoring expenses
-The applicant's proposed affiliation during the grant period with a recognized educational institution in the Asian country.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The next deadline for applications is December 31, 2013 for study starting between June 2014 and May 2015.
