Online education will eventually become free, just like mobile apps: S Ramadorai

Stressing the need to reach rural population through online education, S Ramadorai, vice chairman of TCS and chairman of National Skill Development Agency said, "The gross enrolment ratio of 17% will not do, we need to move to a 21st century model of learning, completely disrupting the conventional model of education as an assortment of brick and mortar schools."

D Lit degree by IIT Bombay

He adds that we need to leapfrog using educational technology that makes reach, scale, affordability and richness of learning experience possible. "For this we need an IT backbone, bandwidth, educational content and stakeholders who can bring all these together," says Ramadorai who was present as a chief guest at 51st Convocation ceremony of IIT Bombay on Saturday.

Encouraging new IIT graduates to take up social entrepreneurship, Ramadorai said that this is the best time for innovators and entrepreneurs and India is the best place for them to be in. According to a study, an IIT alumnus creates 100 jobs and close to 10% of IIT alumni are working in social entrepreneurship roles.

A month ago, seven IITs, NASSCOM, TCS and other private companies have come together to launch a bunch of free Massive Open Online Courses, said Ramadorai. This is biggest Industry-academia partnership which could help 1,00,000 people annually to get higher education making them job-ready also.

On this occasion, Sr Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank and Professor of International Studies at Cornell University Kaushik Basu was conferred with an honorary D Lit degree. Ashoke Sen, renowned scientist who pioneered super string theory (physics) from Harishandra Research Institute at Allahabad was also conferred an honorary degree of Doctorate of Science.

About 2,044 degrees were awarded on this occasion of which 175 were PhDs. Director Devang Khakhar, chairman of board of governing council Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chancellor of Monash University along with deans and professors of IITB were also present.
