WAECRecounting the experience of WAEC in the last five years, one would definitely agree that the examination body has witnessed a huge success after the release of this year's May/June results.

In 2008, for instance, only 23.5 percent candidates obtained five credits and above in subjects including Mathematics and English Language. In 2009, 25.99 per cent obtained five credit pass in Mathematics and English. In the same year, a statement released by WAEC officials, released the results of 1,265,090 candidates representing 92.14 per cent of the total candidates who sat for WAEC examination.

In 2010, only 337,071 candidates, representing 24.94 per cent, obtained credits in English Language, Mathematics and at least three other subjects which are the requirements for admission into tertiary institutions. In 2011, only 42 per cent of students, which represents 677,007 candidates of the 1,351,557 candidates that sat for the May-June 2010 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) obtained five credits and above and only 534,841 candidates obtained six credits and above in the examination, while 337,071 candidates obtained credits in English language, mathematics and at least three other subjects.

In 2012, 161,706 candidates, representing 40.77 per cent, obtained six credits and above; 150,615 candidates, representing 37.97 per cent, obtained credits in five subjects and above; 268,688 candidates, representing 67.74 per cent, obtained credit and above in four subjects; 309,706 candidates representing 78.10 per cent, obtained credits and above in three subjects; while 343,352 candidates (86.57 per cent) obtained credit and above in two subjects.

This year, The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced that a total number of 1,671,286 candidates sat for the examination out of the 1,689,188 candidates that registered for it.

Head of the Nigeria National office, Mr Charles Eguridu, said of the total number of candidates that sat for the exam, 889,636 candidates representing  53.23 per cent obtained six credits and above while 1,074,065 candidates representing 64.26 per cent obtained five credits and above.

His words: "In addition, 1,225,591 candidates representing 73.33 per cent candidates obtained credits and above in four subjects, while 1,353,273 candidates representing 80.97 per cent obtained credit and above in three subjects and a total of 1,465,581 candidates representing 87.69 per cent obtained credit and above in two subjects."

He added that the results of 112,865 candidates representing 6.75 per cent are being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice and which are currently undergoing investigations.

He, however, regretted to announce that the Council was unable to provide statistics of candidates who obtained credit and above in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics because according to him, many candidates in the North Eastern part of the country have partial results at the moment due to security challenges encountered in those areas during the conduct of the examination, particularly loss of scripts.

Eguridu said the investigations will be presented to the Nigerian Examinations Committee (NEC) of the WAEC in due course for consideration, while stressing that the Committee's decision will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools.

"A total of 2,176 cases of multiple entries also were discovered during the processing of the results. In line with the Council's regulation, the entire results of all candidates who are guilty of this act would be cancelled," he said.

Of the 121 blind candidates that registered for the examination, 117 sat for it out of which 24 candidates representing 20.51 obtained credits in five subjects including English Language as blind candidates don't take Mathematics and Science practical in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) diets.

The head of the National Office advised that candidates who sat for the May/June exam should check the details of their performance on the Council's results website: www.waecdirect.org within the next 24 hours.

Eguridu reminded the public once again on the closing date for registration for the November/December 2013 private WASSCE which he said is this Friday, August 9th — but said that in view of the  Ramadan public holidays declared by the Federal Government, the Council has decided to extend the registration to Tuesday, August 20th — to enable candidates whose results are being released and performance are poor to register for the November/December edition to make up.

Reacting to the release of the results, Prof Olu Akeusola, praised the WAEC management for the improvement recorded in this year's results stressing that there is nothing wrong with the curriculum but the problem is teaching methodology.

According to him, if teachers are well remunerated, teachers will deliver quality service to students and the result will be high performance in external examinations just like is being witnessed by WAEC.

"The implication of teachers being poorly paid is that such will not concentrate and will be looking for part time jobs and if students are not properly taught, the country will continue to witness mass failure. There is need for curriculum improvement and supervision as well as human capital development and improvement in structures. There should also be training and retraining of teachers to deliver effectively," he said.

In his own submission, proprietor of Access International School, Magboro, in Ogun State, Dr Jonathan Akpan attributed the success to WAEC officials for not compromising corruption as officials sent to monitor the exam were fully on ground.

He also advised them not to allow any school with inadequate facilities such as school hall for exam to participate in the exercise in order to maintain their standard.
