campusOffice Assistance and Auditorium clerk at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has appealed to both Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government to put an end to the five weeks old strike that has sent students away from the campus.

The staff, Veronica Duru, told Daily Independent that the continued absence of students on the campus has not given her joy but denied her the opportunity to add to her knowledge daily.

Spotted sitting alone under the shady trees at the basement of the institution's Senate Building, the lonely staff said absence of students and disruption in academic learning has denied her the opportunity of interaction with the students as well as issue instructions whenever the need arise.

Duru whose schedule of duty apart from cleaning also include getting auditorium and lecture theaters ready for students , workshops and researchers' said she also missed  their companionship as well as the various irritability often displayed occasionally by the students.

Speaking further she said the absence of a greater number of the students has turned the campus to a near ghost arena, noting that she has not had much to learn and do owing to the lingering strike action.

She said, "I must confess to you that I am missing the continued absence of the students not for any reward or inducement but just being lonely. They are good to interact with including the lecturers from whom I learn while classes are in session. I missed calling students to order not to litter the halls, and to also keep their belongings properly."

"I agree with you they get on my nerves at times. But the joy of it is that they take to corrections. I have not had course to quarrel with some of them because I know they are from different backgrounds. I have had enough exposure and training to deal with them individually and collectively without getting crossed with any of them," she added.

Apparently empathizing with the union on their requests, she added that lectures held at the various auditoriums where she is assigned had afforded her the opportunity to witness the enormous work lecturers do.

She appealed to all stakeholders in the education sector to intervene adequately by ensuring that normal academic learning resume on the campuses nationwide.

The 2006 holder of the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) from the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) whose younger siblings are also affected by the strike advised the students to make good use of the period.

A surveillance of the campus showed students walking around discussing in groups, parking lots were filled with shuttle buses and cabs waiting endlessly for passengers, while the general atmosphere at the institution was without the usual movement of students around the campus.
