ASUUStudents of the University of Maiduguri have lamented that the 41-day old strike by university lecturers has only added to the pains they have to bear for schooling in the state, which is troubled by protracted insurgencies.

Speaking in various interviews with nigerischoolsblog, the students said the strike and the Boko Haram induced violence that have engulfed the state have had a negative effect on their learning coupled with the crisis in the state.

Ibrahim Muazu, former Vice President of the University of Maiduguri Students Union government, who spoke on phone with nigeriaschoolsblog, said the strike enforced by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has only dampened the individual productivity of students of the institution.

"I am not happy about the strike at all. It has caused by personal productivity to drop so much. In fact I am feeling like I am older than my real age, which is what I think my mate feel too," Muazu said.

In this regard, the former student union leader has said students cannot wait for a resolution between the union and the Federal Government.

The students are concerned that the Boko Haram insurgency in the state, which is particularly targeted at proponents of western education is scary enough, hence they are in a hurry to graduate. In this light they see the ASUU strike as one event they wished never occurred, as it would hold them back from graduating at the appropriate time.

Muhammad Saleh, a fresh graduate of Mass Communication in the institution said graduating at this point means almost nothing as he and his mates are unsure of when to move on.

He said he does not know when he would be admitted into the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) programme, being a mandatory programme before employment.

"Joining NYSC would probably be delayed for till next year, since there are no academic activities in the campus. Our results would not be computed," Saleh said.

He added that the strike should be called off immediately, as it is a major setback to the educational sector and the country as a whole. He appealed to ASUU to exercise patience with the federal government.

Hadiza Muktar, a 200 level student at the school noted that an "idle man is the devils workshop," adding that the federal government should meet ASUU's demands since they are buoyant enough to do so.

Recently the institution was shut due to insecurity.

An anonymous source stated that the case of UNIMAID students is pathetic as they are just victims of circumstance.
