Rider University in Lawrence granted $300,000 to improve STEM education

University's School of Education was granted $300,000 to beef up the courses it offers for science and math students who want to go into the teaching profession or for teachers who want to pursue higher training.

The money comes from the Martinson Family Foundation, which has made various contributions for the same purpose to other schools in the U.S. in recent years. The foundation is based in Lawrence and was established by John Martinson, the founder and managing partner of the Edison Venture Fund, also in Lawrence. The fund invests in rapidly growing companies.

The grant from Martinson will be used to create new, online graduate education courses in science, technology, engineering and math instruction (STEM) for pre-kindergarten through 12th- grade teachers.

Educators and governing leaders have long been concerned about the competition U.S. students face in math and technology from students in other countries who are entering the global economy, and what that may mean for the strength of the U.S. economy in future years.

"This online core curriculum model will provide what's needed to bring about significant improvement in STEM education," said Sharon Sherman, dean of Rider's School of Education.

Over the next three years, 180 teachers are expected to complete the program's online graduate STEM courses and more than 300 are expected to participate in five-hour online STEM professional development workshops, the release said.

"This is a perfect opportunity for an elementary education teacher who seeks to gain middle school certification in mathematics or science," Sherman said.

The Martinson Family Foundation has been funding teacher training programs at Rider since 2003, the release said.
