NMEC Guarantee To Reduce Illiteracy

The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) has commenced the training of 4, 107 facilitators to drive its 2013 National Action Plan on Revitalizing Adult and Youth literacy Project (2012 -2015) and beyond.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Jibrin Paiko, disclosed that the revitalization fund for the project would be launched later this year.

It is expected to assist efforts to provide illiterate adults and those who can no longer fit in the education systems with education that would enable them function better in the society.

The fund is meant to be accessed by all stakeholders involved in providing adult and non-formal education.

According to Paiko, individuals like former footballer Segun Odegbami are also being partnered with to let people realise that they can combine education with any other vocation, skill or sport they choose.

"If parents are properly educated, the children would be taken care of in terms of education. Eminent Nigerians with integrity would be selected to run the fund. We have a strategic three year framework already developed to revitalise adult and youth literacy in the country, we are trying to finalise and perfect it," Paiko said.

He added that the commission is also very committed to educating illiterate women.

"This would assist in bringing down the level of infant and maternaCl mortality rates which still remains high in Nigeria," Paiko said.

A minimum of N12 billion will be spent to achieve the mandate, according to Paiko, adding that the Federal Government has already released the sum of N1 billion to UNESCO for the Revitalization fund to be used to for the same purpose.

He reiterated NMEC's commitment to reducing the level of illiteracy among adults and promote mass and non-formal education in Nigeria.
