The Anti-AIDS club of the Yaba College of Technology has organised a three-day HIV screening for students in Lagos.
The Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Action Health Incorporated which helped screen the students at the event which started on Monday urged parents to provide adequate information on sex education for their children to protect them against the negative influence of the social media.
Miss Damilola Adesina, leader of the NGO's screening team said most parents shied away from discussing sex education with their children because of their culture.
She said that parents should play their roles by educating their children early to prevent them from peer group's influence and the social media.
"Children who lacke access to sex education usually turn to their peers for assistance and thereby exposing them to sexually transmitted and infectious diseases," Adesina said, adding that it was the primary responsibility of parents to educate their children on sex, nutrition, security and shelter because they serve as role model to them.
She urged the students, who tested negative to HIV virus, to live healthy and be conscious of their attitude, while those that tested positive should seek medical assistance early.
The president of the club, Okon Ukeme, said that the exercise was held quarterly in the campus to educate youths who were already sexually active and needed to live healthy lifestyles.
One of the beneficiaries of the screening, Miss Monsurat Ologbonori, an ND II Chemical Science student, commended the initiative of the organisers.
"This is my first time of going for HIV screening. Initially, I was scared, but after the screening, I am happy to know my status," Ologbonori said.
Another beneficiary, Mr Onuabuchi Nworie, a HND II Accountancy student, thanked the organisers for according priority to the health status of the students.
"I really appreciate the screening because it helps us to know our status and also teach us to live healthy lifestyle,'' Nworie said. (NAN)
